What was it that made the result so disappointing? The lack of style and cohesion to our play is often brushed over because we have been getting the results from the occasional moments when a sense of cohesion appears. However, the more it continues, it feels the moments of cohesion are just luck. Take the away win at Tranmere, the Aden Flint cross for Jamma’s textbook headed finish. I doubt that Aden Flint had practiced peeling away after a corner other than maybe pulling a defender with him to open up the access to the box.
The first time delivery which Connor Barrett rarely delivers enabled Jamma the opportunity to get a head to the cross without the defenders getting fully set. Was this a training ground move, i doubt it was, the post match comment from Mat Sadler told us everything that it was effectively luck.
The game at home to Accrington should have been a continuation of the dominance at Tranmere, but the same 11 players looked short of ideas, composure or energy.
So we look to the Transfer window additions, Alex Pattison is clearly a quality midfielder that should be lifting up the effectiveness of the midfield, but constantly hoofing the ball over the midfield clearly didnt work (again). Surely Mat Sadler can see it is not working. Whilst talk of working hard was a great message initially, it seems that “working harder” is the only answer he is looking for. How about being more composed and smarter in possession, so we don’t have to work hard trying to get the ball back again.
Loupala-Bi is clearly a striker of great quality, but like Ethan Wheatley, how much time will it take him to adjust. Loupala has played adult football last season, so should adapt quicker, but when the promotion chasers are adding real quality, again, we are rolling the dice on a young inexperienced player.
